Can you make a melee/smite monk? Sure you could, but would it be a good idea? I would argue no.
Other caster classes can get away with devoting skill slots to melee in PvP simply because they're not targeted first... their monks are. With Sig of Devotion as your only heal you won't last very long at all in any arena without heavy support.
In PvE you'll end up 'tanking' if you decided to run into melee. While monks do have a varity of protection skills that *might* make them *almost* as tough as a warrior, it is very weak to enchant strips, interupts, slip-ups, and will dominate a good part of your atribute points, and skill bar.
If you want melee and smiting, go with a W/Mo. I'm not talking out of my ass, or trying to put you down here. I have tried similar builds, and seen others try melee/smite monk primary builds in both PvP and PvE. It simply dosn't work as you'd think.
